A promotional poster for *The Chap-Book*, a small literary periodical, shows a cat and the act of reading, two subjects the record ties to the magazine. The journal was issued from Chicago by the publisher Stone & Kimball in the mid-1890s, when the city's young writers and designers were experimenting with modern, decorative styles. Joseph Christian Leyendecker, then early in his career, would later become far better known for his magazine covers and advertising illustrations. This sheet is an early example of the bold color and simplified shapes that made his work recognizable.
