Dwight Davis is best remembered today for the tennis trophy he donated in 1900, which became the Davis Cup for international competition between national teams. This photoprint was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that produced large numbers of studio and news photographs for newspapers and the public. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting is hard to place in time. Davis later served as Secretary of War in the 1920s and as Governor-General of the Philippines, so the portrait also records a public official whose career extended well beyond the tennis courts.
