George Jeffreys, the first Baron Jeffreys of Wem, is shown here in an engraving by R.W. Smart after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, published in London in 1827. Jeffreys served as Lord Chief Justice of England under James II and became notorious for the Bloody Assizes of 1685, the harsh series of treason trials held in the west of England after the Monmouth Rebellion. The print reproduces a portrait made about a century and a half before its publication, so it reflects how the judge was remembered in the early nineteenth century as much as how he looked in life. Kneller's original is the source of the likeness, and the engraving carries the image into the period's market for printed portraits of notable figures.
