This portrait shows George F. Baker, the New York banker whose dates the caption card gives as 1840 to 1931. Baker led the First National Bank of New York and became one of the best-known financiers of his era, working alongside figures such as J. P. Morgan during a period of large corporate consolidation. The print carries the copyright credit of Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereoscopic views and press photographs. The card records no date, so the sitting itself is hard to place precisely, but the image reflects how prominent bankers of that generation were presented to the public.
