Fort Defiance, Arizona, in 1919 was a small agency settlement on the Navajo reservation in the northeastern corner of the state, near the New Mexico line. The Army had established the original post there in 1851, and it was abandoned in 1861, but the site stayed important as the administrative center for Navajo affairs under federal Indian agents. Life in the surrounding country centered on sheep, goats, wool, and trade at nearby stores, while most goods and mail moved by wagon or truck to the Santa Fe Railway at Gallup, New Mexico, some fifty miles away. The influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919 had struck Navajo communities hard, and the reservation was still recovering from it when this view was made.
