Globe, Arizona, in 1917 was a copper mining town set in the Pinal Mountains of Gila County, built around the Old Dominion Copper Company's mines and smelter. The town had grown up after the 1870s silver and copper strikes, and by the 1910s its population was largely miners, smelter workers, and merchants who depended on the company's payroll. Ore from the district traveled by rail to smelters elsewhere, and the Globe area's copper output fed the national push for wire and munitions as the United States entered the First World War that spring. Residents would have known Globe as a hard-working mining camp with a brick business district, churches, and a courthouse serving the surrounding county.
