Unlike most portraits of Franklin, this one is a printed envelope, so the image was meant to travel through the mail as well as hang on a wall. The record dates it to about 1860, but that date is marked with a question mark and comes from an unverified caption card. Franklin never held the presidency, despite this board's heading. He was a printer, writer, and diplomat, and he served as president of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council in the 1780s. Mid-nineteenth-century envelopes often printed well-known figures as decoration, which suggests Franklin remained a familiar name long after his death in 1790.
