Concord's role as New Hampshire's capital sets this 1899 bird's-eye view apart from many town panoramas of the period. The Merrimack River runs through the city, and the map shows how the state government, churches, and commercial streets were arranged along it at the turn of the century. Panoramic maps like this one were drawn from an imagined high vantage point, and they sold well to civic boosters and residents who wanted a detailed picture of their town. The creator, A. F. Poole, worked in the bird's-eye view trade that produced many such maps for towns across New England and beyond.
