Easton's Beach, the long sandy shore on Newport's Atlantic side, was a favorite summer destination by the early 1900s, when Newport had become a fashionable resort for well-to-do families from New York and Boston. This pair of glass negatives, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1905, captures bathers enjoying the surf in the years when seaside bathing was turning into a popular leisure pastime. The company, known for its vivid travel views, produced many such scenes for sale to tourists. Two negatives of the same subject survive, so the record shows a retake or duplicate of the scene.
