Children at play on the sand are the apparent subject of this Newport beach view, according to the caption tracings on the card. Stereographs like this one were printed as paired images and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth that a single flat print could not match. The card was copyrighted by Alfred S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and dated around 1897, when Newport was a fashionable summer resort for wealthy families. The record data is unverified, so the date and details are best read as approximate.
