Surf bathing at Easton's Beach in Newport, Rhode Island, is captured here in a pair of 8 x 10 inch glass negatives, one of two variants made of the same scene. Easton's Beach, later known as First Beach, was a popular seaside destination in the early 1900s, when Newport's summer colony drew wealthy families and day visitors alike. Bathers of this era typically wore heavy wool or cotton costumes that covered the body, and beaches like this one became places for leisure and social display. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this set around 1900 to 1905, documented resorts, cities and landscapes across the country for commercial sale.
