Newport, Rhode Island, in early August 1899 is the setting for this view of the steam yacht *Aurora*, one of the large private vessels that anchored off the resort town's waterfront. Wealthy families who summered in Newport during the Gilded Age kept such yachts for pleasure cruising and racing, so the harbor was a regular stage for them. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. Its title style and numbering point to the Detroit Publishing Company, though the record does not confirm the maker. The Library of Congress received it as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
