Despite its misspelled title, "Moccasson," this 1890 glass negative records the yacht *Moccasin* competing in the Goelet Cup, a race sponsored by the Goelet family and run off Newport, Rhode Island. In the late nineteenth century Newport was the center of American yachting and the summer retreat of wealthy families, so regattas there drew large crowds of spectators and press. The picture is attributed to the Detroit Publishing Company on the basis of its title style and numbering, not a company number printed on the negative. It is worth a look for its record of the sailing rigs and hulls of the period, when racing yachts were large, lightly built, and carefully tuned for the wind.
