Lawn tennis courts at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island are the focus here, with spectators seated and standing along the grounds. The Casino, a social club designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White, opened in 1880 and hosted the U.S. National Championships in lawn tennis for decades, which made it the sport's social and competitive center in America. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography service that operated in the early twentieth century and sent pictures to newspapers across the country. Its undated record leaves the exact day uncertain, but the crowd and setting show how fashionable tennis had become among the Newport summer colony.
