Newport Casino, the social club on Bellevue Avenue, is the setting here, and it was the heart of American lawn tennis in the early twentieth century. The club hosted the U.S. national championships from 1881 until 1914, drawing crowds of summer residents who came to watch. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a photo agency whose pictures documented news and society life in the period. The title was supplied by the agency and not independently verified, so the scene and exact date are worth checking against other sources.
