A player identified as W.G. Grant is shown serving on the grass courts at the Newport Casino, the Rhode Island resort's social and sporting center. The shingled clubhouse, designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1880, hosted the U.S. National Championships in lawn tennis for much of its early history. This glass negative is dated August 1909 and comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency. The player's name comes from the agency's caption data, which has not been independently verified, so the identification should be treated as provisional.
