Few courts in America carry as much early tennis history as the grass courts at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island, where this scene of players was recorded. Designed by the firm McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1880, the Casino hosted the U.S. National Championships from 1881 until 1914. The record dates the negative to August 20, 1909, but its title comes from unverified Bain News Service notes, so the individual players and any particular match remain uncertain. Glass negatives like this one preserve the clothing and setting of the resort's summer social world.
