Set on the Newport, Rhode Island, shore, this view shows The Breakers, the summer villa the caption ties to Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II and completed in 1895 after an earlier cottage on the site burned. Its Italian Renaissance style, modeled on Genoese palaces, made it one of the most visited showpieces of the Gilded Age summer colony. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one to travelers and tourists who wanted to see the mansions of Newport.
