Few details identify the three women in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, but the brass mat stamped "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati" ties it to a specific studio. Ball worked as a daguerreotypist in Cincinnati during the 1840s and 1850s, when the process was the dominant form of portraiture and sitters often paid for a single image they could hold in a small case. The scrolled oval on the case back is a typical decorative touch of the period, and it is worth noticing because daguerreotypes are unique, mirror-like plates that show the image only at certain angles.
