Athletes caught mid-jump fill this plate, which breaks the standing long jump into a rapid series of positions. Eadweard Muybridge made the sequence at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with tripwire shutters that fired in quick succession. The project began with Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and it grew into a wider study of motion in both animals and people. This print was published in 1881 as plate 100 in Muybridge's book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where the images are meant to be read in order, frame by frame.
