The record gives this glass negative only the title "Karl," a first name the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that the attribution is unverified. The sitter's identity, the occasion and the exact date are therefore unknown. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds news photographs made in New York from about 1900 to the early 1930s, when Bain's agency sold pictures of public figures, events and everyday city life to newspapers. Its 5-by-7-inch and smaller glass plates were a common format of the period, and the collection's images offer a useful view of how press photography worked in that era.
