David Beatty, the Royal Navy admiral pictured here, commanded the British battlecruiser force at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and later led the Grand Fleet, becoming one of the most recognized naval officers of the First World War. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title rests on caption information the agency itself had not verified, so the exact year of the portrait is uncertain. Beatty's dashing style and cap at a rakish angle made him a favorite subject for press photographers of the period.
