Its title, "Lloyd Geo.," most likely refers to David Lloyd George, the British statesman who led the wartime government from 1916 to 1922, though the record flags the identification as unverified. The image survives as a small glass negative, one of many the Bain News Service produced for newspapers and magazines in New York. Bain's files document the rapid spread of news photography in the early twentieth century, when pictures of public figures were pressed into print within hours of being taken. Because the record gives no date, the exact occasion is uncertain.
