Nancy Astor, the Virginia-born Viscountess Astor, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. She became the first woman to take a seat in the British House of Commons in 1919, after succeeding her husband as Conservative member for Plymouth Sutor Division. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, sold images like this one to newspapers across the United States, so the picture reflects the press interest in her as a transatlantic public figure. The record is thin, and the title comes from unverified agency data, so the exact date and occasion remain uncertain.
