The caption on this glass negative gives only the name "I. Zangwill," a label the Bain News Service recorded from unverified notes, so the sitter is most likely Israel Zangwill, the British-Jewish novelist and playwright. His 1908 play *The Melting Pot* gave American English a phrase for immigrant assimilation, and his work drew wide attention in the United States during those years. The record does not give a date, so the occasion for the portrait remains unknown, but it likely falls within the period when the Bain agency was photographing public figures in New York.
