The caption identifies the sitter as Karl Franz Josef, "Joachim's son," which may point to the Prussian royal family, since Prince Joachim was a son of Kaiser Wilhelm II and his son by that name was born in 1916. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, supplied photographs of prominent people to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives were often labeled from wire copy or handwritten cards. The record gives no date and the title is unverified, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain, but the plate shows how quickly such portraits moved from studio to newspaper in the years around World War I.
