Franz Lehár, the Hungarian-born composer best known for the operetta "The Merry Widow" (1905), is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that worked from about 1900 to the early 1920s, shot portraits like this for newspapers and magazines eager for images of celebrities from theater, music and politics. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting is uncertain. Still, the picture is a useful window onto how Lehár was presented to the public during the years when his operettas were filling theaters across Europe and America.
