The only identifying detail here is a name, John Wels, and the record itself flags it as unverified caption information, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The picture survives as a glass negative, a fragile format that news photographers favored in the early twentieth century for its fine detail. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, drawn from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and everyday news. Many of its negatives came with incomplete caption cards, so their subjects are often known only in part.
