The sitter is identified only as John V. French, a name the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that this identification has not been verified. That caveat matters for anyone using the picture as a source. The Bain agency, based in New York, supplied newspapers and magazines with photographs of people and events in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives were typically captioned from information gathered at the time. Treat the name as a starting point for further research rather than a settled fact.
