The only identifying detail this glass negative offers is its place name, a French hospital at Cugny, a village in northern France. Cugny lies in a region that saw heavy fighting during the First World War, when hospitals and aid stations were set up close to the front to treat men moved back from the lines. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers, so it was probably made for quick publication. The record gives no date, and the place name comes from caption cards that have not been verified, so the exact circumstances remain uncertain.
