The name on this glass negative is Hiram Johnson, the California reformer who was governor from 1911 to 1917 and then served in the U.S. Senate until his death in 1945. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, attached the name to the plate, but the record marks it as unverified and gives no date. Johnson's Progressive campaigns made him a frequent subject for press photographers of the 1910s, and Bain's glass negatives from that period show how news pictures were made before the agency's work moved to other formats.
