The sitter is identified only as Mrs. Harvey Coit, a name taken from caption cards that Bain News Service kept with its negatives, and the record notes that it has not been verified. The picture survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, a size common among the agency's working negatives. George Grantham Bain founded the New York service around 1899, and its files of glass plates now document city life, public figures and fashion in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the portrait is best placed in that broad period rather than a specific year.
