Two women, named in the title only as Mrs. Townsend and Mrs. McCann, appear in this glass negative, though those names come from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service. The agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York in the early twentieth century, sold news pictures to newspapers across the country. Its many small glass negatives, often made quickly for daily publication, give the collection its value to historians of the period. With no date recorded, the occasion and the sitters' identities remain open questions for further research.
