The sitter is recorded as Mrs. Roscoe Bulmer, but that name comes from caption cards and data kept by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. The picture survives as a single glass negative, a format that commercial photographers widely used for portraits and news work in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York in 1899, and its files of tens of thousands of negatives now form a major part of the Library of Congress holdings. The plate is a useful record of how a working photo agency served newspapers and magazines of its day.
