The title names three women, Mrs. Frelinghuysen, Mrs. Winston and Mrs. Fisk, taken from caption cards that accompanied this glass negative. The library notes that these identifications are unverified, so the names should be treated as a lead rather than settled fact. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its photographers covered society events, public occasions and people in the news, and many of its images were made on glass plates like this one. Without a firm date, the picture is best read as an example of the posed portraiture that filled press coverage of the period.
