This glass negative shows Mrs. W.G. McAdoo speaking in support of a Victory Loan, the Treasury's war-bond campaign. The record spells the surname "AcAdoo," which appears to be a transcription error for McAdoo, and it gives no date. Her husband, William Gibbs McAdoo, was Secretary of the Treasury during the First World War, and his wife, Eleanor Wilson McAdoo, was the daughter of President Woodrow Wilson and took an active public role in the government's bond drives. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose wire photos documented wartime events, so it offers a glimpse of how bond rallies drew on prominent public figures.
