This glass negative shows Hiram Johnson, the California governor who went on to serve in the United States Senate from 1917 until his death in 1945. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s through the 1920s. Johnson rose to national prominence as a leader of the Progressive movement, and Bain's pictures of political figures like him give a useful view of how the press covered American public life in that era. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown.
