Charles Locke's lithograph, titled simply *The Library*, takes a quiet book-filled interior as its subject. The catalog dates it to the 1920s in brackets, meaning the year is estimated, and the record notes that its details come from an old caption card and have not been verified. Lithography, which works from a flat stone or plate using greasy ink, let artists produce small editions with the soft tones of a drawing, and it was a popular choice for scenes of reading and study in that period. Viewers may want to notice how the artist handles light, shadow and the rows of bound volumes.
