Verdun names a small fortress city in northeastern France that became the center of one of the most punishing battles of the First World War. German forces attacked the place in February 1916, and the fighting dragged on for ten months as both sides poured men into a shrinking stretch of shell-torn ground. By 1919, when this image was made, the war had ended, but the scars of that struggle were still visible across the surrounding countryside. The city and its battlefields came to stand for the enormous human cost of the conflict.
