This 1916 color lithograph by E. Friant asks French viewers to come to the aid of soldiers from Alsace and Lorraine, the two regions Germany had annexed after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Their presence in the French army carried deep emotional weight, since many of these men had grown up under German rule and had long hoped for the return of their homeland to France. Friant was himself a painter with roots in Lorraine, which gives the poster a personal connection to its subject. The image is a useful reminder that wartime appeals in France often tied military sacrifice to national identity and to the cause of reclaiming lost provinces.
