The title's three words, Fatherland, Family and Future, set the emotional terms of this 1918 color lithograph, which urges Germans to buy war bonds with the slogan "8. Kriegsanleihe," the eighth war loan. Germany financed much of its World War I effort through these bonds, and by 1918 the government was asking civilians to lend more money as the war dragged on and its resources thinned. The poster was printed by A. Gässler & Co. and designed by Walter Ditz. It is a useful example of how wartime propaganda tied private savings to the idea of a soldier defending home and future.
