Printed in 1916, this color lithograph carries the Russian title *Voennyi zaem*, or "War Loan," and its record notes that Library of Congress staff translated the title. Posters like this one were a major tool of the Russian government's effort to fund the First World War. Military spending far outran tax revenue, so the state sold war bonds to ordinary citizens, and appeals in the streets and press asked people to subscribe as a patriotic duty. The poster belongs to that campaign, which tied private savings directly to the war effort.
