Poster no. 17 in a series titled *War Loan*, this color lithograph dates from 1915, early in the First World War, when Britain was financing a conflict on a scale it had never faced and increasingly turned to borrowing from ordinary households. The Parliamentary War Savings Committee issued posters like this one to encourage small investors to buy government war bonds and savings certificates. The London firm Spottiswoode & Co., a long-established printer that handled official government work, produced the poster.
