Mickey Mantle is shown signing autographs at his own restaurant in Dallas, a setting that reflects how his fame continued well beyond the ballpark. The image is a single frame from a contact sheet, the small proof that photographers used to choose which pictures to print. Thomas R. Koeniges made it for *Look*, the general-interest magazine known for its photojournalism, and the date noted in the record, September 27, 1968, places it in Mantle's final season with the New York Yankees. The frame offers a glimpse of the celebrity business that grew up around 1960s sports stars, when fans lined up for signatures at the restaurants and shops that bore a player's name.
