Mariposa Grove, near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, holds several hundred mature giant sequoias, including the Grizzly Giant, one of the largest trees in the grove. Its protection dates to the early years of the park's history: Abraham Lincoln's 1864 Yosemite Grant set aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove for public use and preservation, and both were folded into the national park when it was established in 1890. Visitors have long been struck by the sheer scale of these trunks, which can dwarf the people standing beside them.
