Two mounted passenger pigeons, held by Earl Wright of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, make this a rare record of the species in a museum setting. In the 19th century, passenger pigeons were probably the most numerous birds in North America, with flocks that could darken the sky for hours. Market hunting and the clearing of forests drove the population to collapse, and the last known wild bird died in 1900. The last captive bird, Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914, so by 1928 specimens like these were preserved as the only physical reminders of a species that had been lost.
