This color print, issued by the Fame Portfolio Company of Chicago under the title "The Mikado, of Japan," presents the Meiji Emperor for American buyers. "Mikado" was a common Western name for the emperor, and the title reflects how Americans of the period usually referred to him. The print dates to about 1904, the year Japan and Russia went to war, when newspapers across the United States followed Japan closely and interest in the country ran high. The copyright notice names E.R. Dumont. The emperor, who reigned from 1867 until his death in 1912, presided over Japan's rapid modernization during his lifetime.
