Strolling outside the Art Institute of Chicago with his son, Everlasting Cloud, Chief Thunder Cloud is shown in a family moment rather than in costume or on a film set. Thunder Cloud, a Native American actor who appeared in many Hollywood Westerns, was a familiar public figure by the mid-1950s, and pictures like this one show how he presented himself off screen. The 1954 date places the photograph in a decade when Chicago's museums and Michigan Avenue drew steady crowds of visitors, and the image is also a record of how Native families, and Native children in particular, were pictured in mid-century city life.
