A large 18 by 22 inch glass negative records a Chicago and North Western Railway passenger train, made around 1898. The negative's log entry suggests it was the left section of a longer panorama, with the rest of the set held elsewhere. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many such views for sale, used cameras like this to capture the scale of American rail travel at the turn of the century. Chicago, where the North Western ran its main lines, was then the country's busiest rail hub, and trains like this one carried commuters, freight and long-distance travelers out of its stations.
