The Great Coliseum was a temporary wooden hall erected on Boston's Back Bay for the World's Peace Jubilee and International Musical Festival, the 1872 event organized by bandleader Patrick Gilmore. Its vast interior was built to hold tens of thousands of listeners and a chorus and orchestra numbering in the thousands, with the festival's music drawing on performers from around the world. The Jubilee grew out of a postwar enthusiasm for civic celebration in Boston, and the hall itself became a spectacle as much as the concerts. Prints like this one show how the enormous structure dominated the newly filled Back Bay landscape.
